I found this Ethan Allen table at a consignment store for only $36. Really nice quality, but dated. Ava needed a side table beside her bed so I made this one girly. I thought it turned out really good.
This is my budget makeover. The cabinets were basic oak laminate, really plain and ugly. I hate the pink in the sink, but it's not going anywhere soon. I used the colors from one paint strip from Sherwin Williams and replaced the hardware with brushed nickel. The middle green was used on the walls, the darker on the sink cabinet and the lightest on the tall cabinet.
We installed wainscoating, trim, and hooks for towels, and new linoleum floor. My inspiration for the mirrored frames came from a magazine photo where they used hand mirrors in an arrangement. I loved that idea, and looked for silver hand mirrors for a long time, but was never able to find enough to make a collage. I bought silver frames and replaced the glass with mirrors. I know it's weird, but I LOVE my laundry room. I ordered the words online through Amazon from company "Wall Sayings Vinyl Lettering". I've put up several wall sayings and this was by far the easiest. Not easy, but easier than the others found at craft stores. The letters were of a higher quality vinyl.
So I needed a low profile desk because this sits right near the door and I didn't want it to block the entrance. Again, it's a young adult male room, so I felt the industrial look would work. The front folds down when not in use. I used 3/4" piping from Home Depot.
I saw this fabric at Walmart and had to have it. Looks like real leather and feels buttery soft. Didn't know what I'd do with it, but I figured that out later. I decided to make a headboard for my girlfriends daughter, Abby, who loves all things western and horses.
I made it extra tall and padded so she could lean back and read comfortably in bed. Rope is wrapped around the bottom edging and as a trim. I bought conchos from the local tack shop for the accents. I think it came out beautiful...the picture doesn't do it justice. The boys had gone off the college and I was super eager to give their rooms a more "adult" look. Since they're still home from college during the summer, they needed to still be masculine. So...I built this corner table where one twin bed could slide under the table, freeing up room when it wasn't needed. You may wonder "why is everything in front of the window?". Well, there are 4 windows, 3 doors, and a bump out where the chimney goes upstairs. If there wasn't furniture in front of the windows, there wouldn't be room for any furniture.
I needed some height in the corner so I added storage cubes. If you like the light in the corner, I bought a large birdcage and added one of the vintage lights. To solve the on/off problem, I bought a remote switch, so you can turn it off while in bed. I didn’t really have a plan, but I just measured my bed and worked out from those numbers. First, you’ll need to measure the height of your bed. They are all different, depending on your base. I made mine 27” high, but if I had it to do over, I’d do 28”. I have a mattress pad, sheets, and a thin comforter. Most bedspreads are thicker, so you may need to add a little more. Same for the opening width of the bed. Mine is 39.5”, but I’d go 40” to allow more room for bedding material. You may choose to add more. Just add it on to your table top size. Legs are 1.5” x 1.5” which I bought at Home Depot. One sheet (4 x 8) of ½” premium cabinet plywood. ½” trim for the edge of the table. Four times the width of your table. I used the Kreg Pocket-Hole System to connect it all. You’ll need to use some scrap wood for the corners on the bottom of table. Just cut the ends at 45° so you’ll get a solid corner. I hope this helps. While working out on the treadmill this morning, I watched HGTV where Sara Richardson was redecorating a young girls bedroom and a baby's nursery. The jumping off point was a tea napkin from the Anthropology store. It was the same one I loved and bought! Anyway, they mixed loads of colors and patterns in the rooms, and I just LOVED them. They also built in the girls beds along the wall. I'm thinking...I could do that! Easy enough and really cute. Here's the link showing the video. I also loved the striped wool carpeting. They said wool doesn't give off toxic smells, which is great for kids, and adults of course.
